Coumadin Diet

Coumadin Diet

What’s the Coumadin Diet?

When you’re taking an anticoagulant or “blood thinner” such as warfarin or Coumadin, it is important to monitor your intake of vitamin K.  Vitamin K is a nutrient found in many of the dark-green leafy vegetables.

Why is Vitamin K Important to Limit While Taking Blood Thinners?

Vitamin K plays an important role in the formation of a blood clot.  Blood thinners such as warfarin work by inhibiting the action of vitamin K and thus slow down the rate at which blood clots.  If you follow a diet rich in vitamin K, then quickly stop eating vitamin K, you will have an increased risk of bleeding.  If you follow a diet low in vitamin K, then suddenly consume a high amount of vitamin K, this can lead to a blood clot.

Recommended Vitamin K Intake

It is recommend men consume less then or equal to 120 micrograms (mcg) of vitamin K daily and women consume less then or equal to 90 micrograms (mcg).   Below is a list of foods high in vitamin K.
